Why do hackers hack and why do people write destructive viruses to disable networks?  If this were a perfect world, we would not need firewalls or anti-virus strategies.  However, as long as businesses need computers, and as long as people need to communicate, there will be a need to protect these interests.

Viruses are frustrating and potentially harmful nuisances. Viruses can get into your network by way of Internet e-mail, attachments to e-mail, web access clients, web pages, and removable media.  E-mail and e-mail attachments pose the biggest threat to your network.  A virus strategy needs to include protection at the desktop and at the gateway to the Internet.  A good strategy includes monitoring the site of the software package you have chosen to use to make sure your pattern files are up to date.  When possible, we will set up the system to provide updates automatically.

To protect the network from hackers, we recommend firewalls. We gather information to understand the network configuration, and we implement either a software or hardware firewall.  Based on our client’s experience or concerns, usually the introduction of a firewall is sufficient to avoid damage caused by hackers.   In some circumstances we may recommend an intrusion detection analysis, especially if internal resources have been compromised.

We can recommend and implement web filtering solutions and e-mail filtering solutions.  A web filtering solution will disallow access to undesirable web sites; an e-mail filtering solution will discard spam e-mail before it reaches the desktop.  As part of a secure network strategy, these solutions will increase network performance and productivity.
